The written examination is based on the specifications of the American Welding Society, the requirements of the Los Angeles City Building Code relating to the welding classification for which the certification is requested, and accepted welding practice.

Closed Book Section Info

The closed-book section of the written examination is based on American Welding Society specifications and accepted welding practices.  It requires a thorough understanding of, but is not limited to:

  • Equipment normally used in welding
  • Electrode designations, identification, and uses
  • American Welding Society standard weld symbols
  • Interpretation of required welds and joint preparations as shown by details, symbols, or notes on shop and field plans
  • Welding processes
  • AWS prequalified joints

Questions: 30 (20 general knowledge, 10 welding symbols)

Time:  30 minutes

Passing Score:  70%

Open Book Section Info

The open-book section of the written examination covers the requirements of the Los Angeles City building code relating to the welding classification for which the certification is requested.  Consequently, applications must take a copy of AWS D1.1: Structural Welding Code - Steel (2008 or 2010 edition) to the examination.  Please note that the 2015 edition of the code book is allowed, but only with prior approval from the LADBS.

Passing Score:  70%
